It's already Wednesday again. For WIOW* this week, I thought I would share with you guys one of my running secrets. I am still on track for hitting my two miles per day goal and here's how I am able to do it...
It's really not a secret that I despise running. The thought of running makes me nauseous. I mentally discourage myself when running. I can't help but think things like "I am already so tired and have only x far!" or "How can I keep doing this for another x minutes?" Even though I am not actually tired, I will literally exhaust myself by thinking these things. I once pretended to throw up in the middle of the timed mile in Middle School because I didn't think I could finish the last two laps!
So how do I get through it and run 2-3 miles 3-4 times per week? Intervals and Netflix, baby!
So on to intervals... When I started hearing that intervals were good for you, I was so happy. Intervals are great for people like me who get bored and discouraged by a consistent routine. By watching the timer and changing up speeds, inclines, etc, I never get bored. I also don't feel as tired although my heart rate stays pretty much the same as if I were doing consistent run. Because there are so many variations you can do, I never actually do the same intervals during the week! Here are a few that I do that I love:
I highly applaud all of you who can do long, consistent runs. But if you are like me and need some variation or just want to mix it up a bit, I encourage you to try one of the above. Or use one of these to make your own unique interval sequence!
What are your running/workout secrets? Have you done interval running before?

when i used to do more cardio (i've been slacking lately), i loved to do it while watching tv - it made the time go so much faster! and i love intervals too - they are the workout version of "more bang for your buck" :)

I always hated running! Then I started rock climbing, which I love, and which also got me into shape- so now running isn't as hard as it used to be :). I like it a little better now that I am not so terrible at it, haha!
ReplyDeleteOh god, timed miles in school gives me a panic attack just thinking about it! Running and I do NOT mix :)

I love that you made pinnable graphics! The hills interval is similar to the one I like to do (when I'm not being lazy). Definitely pinning!
ReplyDeleteso true! i always end up running just a bit longer if i am watching a show and need to finish the episode and scenes for the next!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, watching a show is the BEST distraction evvver! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm just like you, I hate running. In high school and middle school I'd make my coaches SO mad because I wouldn't run the mile, I'd walk most of it. A goal in my life has been to actually run a full mile (sad right??), but I actually just accomplished it this week!! I've been run/walking a mile everyday and finally was able to run the whole thing. I discovered I can't do treadmills or ellipticals. I found I was actually able to run further and faster if I was outside. I can see where I'm going and far I have left to go. The next time it is raining though, I'll have to try this idea out in the weight room!

Love this post!! I'm the exact same way when it comes to running! And I really hate it with a passion but lately my husband and I have been trying to do it every morning and we do intervals as well. Walk/jog/walk/jog and it helps to have Kobi with us because he is always up for the challenge to run the extra mile. lol!

Definitely saving these! thanks! I need a better way to attack the 'ole treadmill... I never stay on it long enough cause... well..i hate running LOL
ReplyDeleteRunning intervals is a great way to train and they can be used for a beginner all the way through to a more seasoned runner with a little modification. Great samples!

I think I have only run 1 time. And I hated it! But it really is such a great way to get in shape. Don't know if I can do it though because of my shot knees. Keep up the great work. You can do it!

Wow! I commend you for trying to make running fun. It's an impossible task for me, which is why the eliptical and I are best friends. :)
