Navy, Neon, Pearls and Jackfruit

So I ventured out ONCE over the weekend to our favorite Vegan place, Native Foods. It was my first time out of sweats but I needed to stay comfy so I wore my favorite Gap sweater (one of the 3 colors I own) and my neon pink shorts. The bright color just makes me feel better. I wore my sneaker sandals - Sanuks - and pearls to make me look fancy. I hated leaving my best friend for the weekend - my kleenex box - so I used my Tory Burch bag so I could it with me. I love big bags!

So on to Native Foods we went. I think I have talked about this place before, but I have a new love for it. The restaurant is totally vegan - not just vegetarian. Meaning no cheese, meat, dairy, etc. They make the most amazing nachos and now have an awesome taco salad. But the other night, I ventured out and tried something I have never tried before...Jackfruit! What??

So Jackfruit is an actual tropical fruit that people have been using as a meat substitute for years. When it's ripe, it tastes sweet, like a banana or coconut. When unripe, it has a meaty texture and is used to replace shredded chicken or pork in Vegan dishes. There are numerous health benefits but the ones I like are that it is low in calories, high in protein and rich in Vitamins C and B.

I saw it on the menu last time we were there and since I am not an adventurous eater, I decided to research it before I tried it. Since I had not seen any Jackfruit deaths or serious allergic reactions reported anywhere on the web, I knew I was going to try it.

So not scary anymore! So good!

I am so glad I did because, OMG, it was awesome. They prepared it like a pulled BBQ sandwich with an Asian slaw on top. Wow! It sort of tasted like a cross between pulled pork, an artichoke and hearts of palm. So good!! I cannot wait to go back and have it again. They also have a menu item that uses Jackfruit like crab for vegan crabcakes. I hate crab and can be funny with real mayo so a fake version...I am so there!

Another amazing thing about Native Foods...their drinks. They have all you can drink natural juices and teas. My two favorites are the Watermelon Agua fresca (pictured above) which is fresh watermelon, mint and agave and the Lavender Lemonade. I sometimes even mix the two together and always get a to-go cup so I can drink them the next day. Yum!

Have you ever tried Jackfruit? What is your favorite meat substitute? Or are you a real meat only kind of gal?
