Bright Stripes & Dressing for Me

J. Crew Sweater (old but this is similar) // Neon Pink Gap Jeans // Kate Spade Purse (old) //
Pave Link Bracelet (similar here) // CWAK Lace Necklace // Steve Madden Shoes (similar)

Just the other day my husband told me that I wear a lot of stripes.

This concerned me because...

1. we've been together for 6 years and he is just noticing this now

2. his tone implied he wasn't thrilled with my outfit which consisted of a navy and white striped sweater, neon pink jeans and my neon yellow lace necklace.

Because I was sure it was more about the latter, I asked him why he hated my sweater. He said he didn't. I know he loves my necklaces (so he says) so asked him why he hated my jeans...silence.

Aha...

So then we got to talking about colored jeans, which I am slightly obsessed with. Apparently he hates them - most guys do.  He then went on to tell he also dislikes cropped pants - of all kinds. He prefers good old classic regular length blue colored boot leg jeans - aka something I have not worn in ages.

Here's the kicker...although I love to make my husband happy and try to look decent for him most of the time, I realized that I didn't care what he thought because I still love my colored skinny (sometimes cropped) jeans and I am going to keep wearing them no matter what.

But then I got to thinking, do most women dress for other women or for men? What do I do? Obviously I don't dress for him otherwise I would have a huge bag of giveaway clothes. So then do I dress for other women? I guess kind of...I mean I do blog about my outfits so that sort of counts right?

The conclusion I came to was that there are some times I dress for men (scarf shirt) and there are some times I dress for women (peplums - only ladies really know why they are so flattering), but overall I dress for me.

I have always been one to wear what I want to wear regardless of other people's opinions. I have started trends, followed trends and avoided trends (sorry, not doing the wedge high top sneaker thing right now). I wear what I feel comfortable in and what I think looks best on me. I don't care if the color is right for the season or if all the other bloggers would approve. If I like it, that's all that counts. And I am happy with that.

And now I know that the next time my husband pisses me off, I will go out and buy a new pair of brightly colored cropped, skinny jeans; most definitely the perfect win-win situation for me. :)

Who do you dress for?

  1. I love hearing that you're going to keep dressing for you whether your hubby likes it or not! That's the way it should be!

My husband pretty much always says I look cute, no matter what I'm wearing. I think he just doesn't pay much attention to clothes!

  4. My husband rarely comments on my outfits. Except for the time he said my outfit looked like an outer space outfit. Not sure what he meant by that! I need more colored jeans, that's a fact!

  5. Haha.. sometimes my husband likes to put in his two cents regarding my outfits and like you, I don't dress for my husband. I dress for myself! Whatever I like or want to get in trend of, I get for myself just because I'm comfy in it. And I LOVE colored jeans! Lately I've been wanting all kinds of colors and my husband only cares for a few colors. He thinks I'm crazy when it comes to printed jeans/pants.. he does say something about those. :P

  7. Yes! Dress for yourself!! I've always looked at my outfits as ways to express myself, and I just wouldn't feel comfortable or be happy wearing trends that wasn't me. I personally think guys have a thing about colored jeans.. my fiance is the same way.

Well, I love your neon pink with the black and white stripe sweater! You rock it girl!

    Have a beautiful day, Jill!
